"You Live on an Island?"

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

Whenever I travel and meet new people this question usually gets asked at some point. Yup, it's true. If you travel to the edge of the earth, where you can't go any further, catch the ferry and I'll meet you on the other side - that's where I live!

It's a relatively small island located in the Bay of Fundy in eastern Canada. While the primary industry is lobster [and other forms of] fishing, you'll also find a vibrant tourist industry, lots of locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, a whale and seabird research center, lighthouses, hiking trails, WHALE CAMP (anyone else's hometown have a whale camp?!) and so much more. If you come in the summer be sure to keep your eyes peeled! The waters surrounding Grand Manan are full of sealife. Seals, porpoises, jellyfish, and whales are just a handful of creatures you'll find if you look in the right places.

"Do you have a grocery store? Shopping mall? You must have a Starbucks...?" These are the next questions people seem to ask. Yes - we have a grocery store/gas station and enough local stores/cafés to keep us occupied, but nope, we don't have a mall or Starbucks! Not even a Tim Horton's! (Which is totally fine with me).

For some perspective, here's an average trip to Walmart from my house:

5:30am wake up

6:30am in line for the ferry which loads at 7am

9am arrive in Black's Harbour (the "other side")

10am drive into town and arrive at Walmart!

It does force you to plan ahead for things like running errands, doctor appointments, etc. BUT the experience of living next to the ocean and being part of such a tight-knit community is totally worth it. It's completely different than city life... but maybe that's why we like it so much.

This is the side of the shed in my backyard. I love all of the colours and textures! Do you know what these are or what they're used for? Let me know what you think in the comments!
